    小贾尼丝可不是主日学校里最好的学生。她经常课上睡觉。一天,贾尼丝正打着盹儿,老师提问她了:“告诉我,贾尼丝,谁创造了万物?” 贾尼丝也没个动静,这时坐在她身后的小男孩约翰,用大头针刺了一下贾尼丝的屁股。

补充背景:
主日学校(Sunday School),通常在固定主日礼拜之前,之间或之后举行的宗教教导课程。在有些教会中用“教会学校”一词。主日学校主要是针对儿童,但在大多数教会中,也为成人开设课程。成人课有时也称查经班。主日学校的教师常为接受过某些训练的平信徒志愿者。课程按年龄层次设置并通常是与教会年历一致。大量跨教派间的或各教派组织提供教材。

I just recall the Chinese translation from my gray zone, by someone else:主日學是兒童為體現父母邪惡親心而作救贖的監獄。

"翻译完之后才领会了其中的味道,如果管理觉得不妥,可以删去这篇译文"。

  This translation is really something, of good choice, with good taste, wits and wisdom, and thought provoking may I say. Only asses would feel something wrong, sniffing, and have it axed.

  One substantial commentary is worth 10,000 hits, any dummies can do that, by reading, and might grin, and that's it, without activating their brain cells to ponder and think....
 
天生一只又一只,三四五六七八只;鳳凰何少鳥何多, 啄盡人間千百石。

  You can't pick an elephant from hundreds of thousands of ants, or a phenix from 99 other ( 3x4, 5x6, 7x8, +2) birds. Forget Nobel Laureate anything by counting on birds and ants.

Only after reading the original then I see what the hidden message means.
少年哀乐过于人,歌泣无端字字真。既壮周旋杂痴黠,童心来复梦中身。
童言無忌。成人者,不失赤子之心也。These poor SS kids have my sympathy, most adults lost their innocence in the rat race, of adu( 阿堵 $, ¥,RMB etc)by subjecting their malleable and formative minds to such religious nonsense ( regurgitating by gullible female teachers who faint upon such child candor, thus impeding their cognitive mind to develop in the years to come, and to know the real world, as it is, in the eyes of children. Another big issue.
One of these early victims did not buy such Sunday balderdash and later turned an autodidactic, a self learned man and the greatest journalist (188--1956). People later call him the “The Sage of Baltimore", the same city of Michael Phelps, the greatest swimmer, who bagged away all golds in BJ Olympics in 2008.
  Write to him on a plain envelope " To Mr. H.L.Mencken" w/o the address, and the postman would have no difficulty in delivering the letters to 1524, Holling Street, Union Square, Baltimore, only if he were still alive.
   Please overlook and forgive my bluntness/frankness/lack of subtlety etc. and I should be delighted and grateful to be illuminated by the above coded response of yours, which is Greek to me.
    Your translation is fully loaded with sparks for further elaboration on big issues by this modest soul drifting in the netherland where there is no gravity, something that I read early today, about a temple in BJ, by someone, I bear some resemblances,梁啟超,from the same county of Xinhui more than a century ago...........

Something happened in a similar way a couple of months ago, call it blessing in disguise, 因祸得福:

I did the same as Mr. Liang, my 同乡,in the winter of 1989, to pay a visit to that very temple. It's my first visit to BJ, and the first time to see snow.
I read the first 3 chapters of this book in 1984, that's it. The author was so fully occupied that he stopped, several years later, to finish it in a month or so.
  The first 3 chapters, totalling some 10,000 words, sufficed my intention of paying this temple a visit in that historical moment of this ancient culture of ours. I met the abbot, who wrote me a poem, which I still remember and can recite. 人身难得今已得,佛法难闻今已闻; 莫待年老方学佛, 孤坟满是少年人。Tears came to my mind now, and then.
  After I returned to HK, I processed a few paragraphs regarding the legend and origin of this temple, why it was built, for whom, the sacrifices of young soldiers in an unjustified war by 唐太宗,in his invasion of Korea. I mailed the processing, with my 天马Chinese processor, developed by the Canadians, to the abbot.
  A long story, eh, prompted by your Sunday School.

    “也是,也不是。我对佛法有研究的兴趣,可是并没像善男信女那样对佛膜拜,当然也从不烧香叩头。”

    “我也一样,我们是志同道合了。我对佛法喜欢研究,也喜欢逛逛寺庙。可是,总觉得寺庙跟佛法的真义,有许多冲突的地方。宋明帝起造湘宫寺,他说‘我起此寺是大功德’,可是虞愿却说了真话,他说:‘陛下起此寺,皆是百姓卖儿贴妇钱。佛若有知,当悲哭哀愍。罪高佛图,有何功德?’像湘宫寺这种寺庙,古往今来也不知有了多少,可能寺庙盖得愈多愈大,离真正的佛门精神反倒愈疏愈远。当然,这座法源寺有点例外,它本来是唐朝的忠烈祠,一开始并没有这种大雄宝殿式的佛教气氛。”

    梁启超的广东官话,说得很慢,口音有点奇怪,但是见解更奇怪了——在佛堂里,他没有诃佛骂祖,但他似乎根本否定了佛堂的意义。使面前的湖南人听了,备感好奇。湖南人说:

“你老兄的见解是很高明的,我们又是志同道合了。严格说来,寺庙这些有形的东西,除了有艺术的、建筑的和一点点修持的功能外,离真正佛门精神,诚如你所说,十分疏远。自佛法人中国来,演变得好奇怪,一开始就走入魔障,大家没能真正把握住佛门实质,反倒拼命在形式上做功夫,佛门的大道是无形的,可是自命为佛教徒的人,却整天把它走得愈来愈有形,盖庙也、念经也、打坐也、法会也、做佛事也……这些动作,其实跟真正的佛心相去甚远了。《华严经》有‘回向品’,主张已成‘菩萨道’的人,还得‘回向’人间,由出世回到入世,为众生舍身。这种‘回向’后的舍身,才是真正的佛教。但是,佛教传到中国,中国人只知出世而不知入世,只走了一半,就以为走完了全程。他们的人生与解脱目标是‘涅槃’,以为消极、虚无、生存意志绝灭等,是这种路线的目标,他们全错了。他们不知道,佛法的神髓,到这里只走了一半,要走下一半,必须‘回向’才算。谈到‘回向’后的舍身,佛门人物也干过,但那只是走火入魔。五代后期,周世宗就指出:‘僧尼俗士,自前多有舍身、烧臂、炼指、钉截手足、带铃挂灯、诸般毁坏身体、戏弄道具、符禁左道、妄称变现还魂坐化、圣水圣灯妖幻之类,皆是聚众眩惑流俗,今后一切止绝。’可见这种舍身,也只是把戏,并非真的为生民舍身。五代后期,全国财务困难,周世宗下令毁掉天下铜佛像,用来铸钱。他的理由是:我听说佛教以身世为妄,利人为急,如果佛本人真身尚在,为了解救苍生,一定连真身都肯牺牲,何况这些铜做的假身呢?这种理论,才是真正深通佛法的理论。明朝未年,张献忠‘屠戮生民,所过郡县,靡有了遗’。有一天,他的部下李定国见到破山和尚,破山和尚为民请命,要求别再屠城。李定国叫入堆出羊肉、猪肉、狗肉,对破山说:‘你和尚吃这些,我就封刀!’破山说:‘老僧为百万生灵,何惜如来一戒!’就立刻吃给他看,李定国盗亦有道,只好封刀。周世宗和破山和尚,他们真是第一流深通佛法的人,因为他们真能破‘执’。佛法里的‘执’有‘我执’和‘法执’:我执是一般入所认为主观的我;法执是所认为客观的宇宙。因为他们深通佛法,所以能‘为百万生灵’,毁佛金身,开如来戒。而一般的佛门人物,整天谈世间法、谈出世间法,其实什么法部不能真的憧、真的身体力行。佛教被这些人信,被这些善男信女信,‘佛若有知,当悲哭哀憨’。释迦牟尼死不瞑目了。”湖南人一口气说了这些,愈说愈有火气起来。

    Buddism has at least, been assimilated into the Chinese culture since the Tang Dynasty, and many deem it localised, be part of our culture.
    There is so much to tap from the long river of history of 5,000 years, and I fail to figure out how come there are more and more Chinese youth opted the bloody western faith, with its savior descending like avatar 2009 years ago, 500 years after Laozi and Confucius, and gone, never returned, despite the prognostication of HIS second coming, while the CP made it, a paradise, from the ruins caused by the G8, in a few generations.
  I had a chance to cross path with him up there, the netherland or heaven,the most boring place, w/o gravitation, as I cautioned him not to brag about what he claimed he can, that he can't. He was embarrased, telling me that he impregnated a Jewish gal, and the people there on earth still keep gossiping about him, after these years.
  
  And Darwin and its evolution, Origin of Species, into its 150 years.
  
  It's OK to resort to Mathematics for birth control, but not acceptable to resort to Chemistry or Physics for that purpose, according to Vatican, in this 21st Century.

  There is so much I still am not sure of, that some people of lower intellect, reading nothing by the first class minds, that they know Eve and Adam started all the jabbing without planning. That's what pissed the little gal Janice off while she was having a wonderful day dream.

从广和居出来,又在外面料理了许多事,梁启超回到米市胡同南海会馆的时候,已经夜里十点了。他躺在床上,辗转不能入睡,决定找点东西看看。忽然想起,早上谭嗣同不是送了他四首诗吗?何不现在就看看?于是,他点起蜡烛,读了起来:

    同住莲华语四禅,空然一笑是横阗。惟红法雨偶生色,被黑罡风吹堕天。

    大患有身无相定,小言破道遣愁篇。年来嚼蜡成滋味,阑入楞严十种仙。

    
无端过去生中事,  兜上朦胧业眼来。 灯下髑髅谁一剑。 尊前尸家梦三槐。
金衰喷血和天斗, 云竹闻歌匝地哀。 徐甲优容心忏悔,  愿身成骨骨成灰。

死生流转不相值,天地翻时忽一逢。 且喜无情成解脱, 欲追前事已冥濛。

桐花院落乌头白,芳草汀洲雁泪红。再世金环弹指过,  结空为色又俄空。

柳花夙有何冤业?萍末相遭乃尔奇! 直到化泥方是聚, 只今堕水尚成离。

  焉能忍此而终古, 亦与之为无町畦。我佛天亲魔眷属,  一时撒手幼僧祗。

How can these poems be translated into English and appeal to the muddle heads of the members of the panel of the Nobel Prize in Literature? I have the English version of this book, and the original copies published in TW, with color photos of the temple, at a price of 1 in TW for 20 copies in China mainland, which is RMB4.90.

    梁启超读着、读着、读着,他惊呆了。天啊!这是多么好的诗!沉郁哀艳,字字都是学道有得之作!按说“诗无达诂”,解诗并无清楚的定说,但是,这四首诗读起来,你立刻就有一股苍茫的感觉,在这种感觉中去追寻一点文字的痕迹,还是可以“达诂”一下的。于是,梁启超披身坐起来,开始仔细推敲诗稿。

    “谭复生这诗,所受佛学影响之深。一开始就看出来了。”梁启超自言自语,“佛门把莲花看做最清净出凡的花,净土宗的佛教徒甚至强调死后托生莲华,花开见佛。佛门有‘莲华国’,这是西方极乐世界的境界。在这种境界中,修四种禅定所生的天——‘四禅天’,从初禅天的鼻舌以外眼耳身意四识,直到四禅天的六识之中只剩意识,十八天中境界愈来愈高,高到可以空中一笑,笑声洋溢。想到弘扬佛法,天雨生色之时,一阵黑风吹来,天空也就惨雾愁云。《老子》说:‘吾所以有大患者,为吾有身。及吾无身,吾有何患?’只要我不考虑到我自己的生命,我就一”切超脱起来,这种超脱,就是佛门中的身无定相,在身无定相下,《庄子》所说的‘小言詹詹’也就聊以遣悲怀、破邪道了。正由于自身已无,再回过头来务实一下,所以虽然无欲心而行事,一如《楞严经》所描写的味同嚼蜡,其实也是不无滋味的,大可跟着《楞严经》所列的‘十种仙’一块儿上天下地一番呢!”

    “十种仙”是什么?梁启超记不清了,他下了床,在书架上取下《楞严经》,查了一下。原来是:

    地行仙、飞行仙、

    游行仙、空行仙、

    天行仙、通行仙、

    道行仙、照行仙、

    精行仙、绝行仙。

    “好,现在再研究第二首。”梁启超自言自语,“佛门说三世转生;是谓三生。《集异门论》说三世是过去世、未来世、现在世。白居易诗有‘世说三生如不谬,共疑巢许是前身’。谭复生写‘无端过去生中事,兜上朦胧业眼来’,自然是指前生之事,无始无终的,忽然显现此生。佛门所说的生死轮回,是由‘业’决定。‘业’包括行动上的‘业’,就是‘身业’;语言上的‘业’,就是‘口业’、‘语业’;思想上的‘业’,就是‘意业’。业有善有恶。由‘业’生出的是‘业力’,是指善恶报应的一种不可抗拒的力量,这种力量来自‘业因’,达成‘业果’、‘业报’。‘业因’是前世给今生的报应。由于前世有‘业因’,所以前世的无始无终的许多事,在朦胧之间,尽入眼底。西太后和小人们,逆天行事,歌舞升平,只是想盘据高位,位三公而对三槐,满朝行尸走肉,一如《庄子》所指的‘髑髅’,祢衡所指的‘坐者为冢、卧者为尸’,总该把他们清除。贾岛的诗说:‘撞钟饮酒行射天,金虎蹙裘喷血斑。’在小人在位、违反天意的时局里,我跟他们,展开一场苦战,悲歌慷慨,动地而来,但这又算什么?生在鼎食之家,我的一切都得自吾土吾民,我不是我,我只是一具枯骨,今天在尚有血肉生命时候,我要仟悔、我要发愿牺牲自己:愿我的肉体化为枯骨、枯骨化为灰烬,为吾土吾民献身。”

    梁启超又进一步自言自语:“这诗的整个意思落在最后‘徐甲傥容心忏悔,愿身成骨骨成灰’上。是用晋朝葛洪《神仙传》的典。徐甲是老子的佣人,跟了老子许多年,可是从没拿到薪水,有一天他忍不住了,向老子算总账,说老子欠他多少多少。老子真行,他一言不发,把徐甲化为枯骨一具。这时徐甲恍然大悟:他清楚知道,原来自己只不过是一具枯骨,他的血肉生命怎么来的,还不明白吗?区区人间小事,还计较什么?于是他忏悔了。谭复生引徐甲的故事,当然是说我们要粉身碎骨去为大目标奋斗,只有这种大目标,才有意义;其他人间小事,都是没有意义的。”

    “至于第三首,”梁启超寻思着,“就更沉郁哀艳了。佛门言死生流转,在人经历无量度数的轮回后,跟自己心上的人怀念的人,本已无法相值交会。不料,在天翻地覆的乱世里,我跟我心上的人怀念的人却又巧遇了、相逢了。但是,前世的因缘,已杳然难寻,欲寻还休,我也以无情解脱自喜。自古以来,从燕宫归怨、到吴宫离愁、到入间的雁行折翼,本有着大多的离情别绪,纵使入间因缘,像羊叔子那样,本是李家七岁坠井而死的男孩的后身,且有金环以为物证,但是,又怎样呢?死生又流转了,再世相逢,最后空空如也,还如一梦中。”

    “最后一首也有情诗成分,”梁启超心想着,“不过,它综合了前三首,把对生命、对国家、对人情的一切,都串连在一起。这首诗写人间柳絮飘萍,本寄迹水面,各自东西,虽然今天堕水成离,他年却会化泥成聚。目前,纵有着屈原《离骚》的痛苦,却可展现庄周随缘的无垠。佛门以波旬魔王常率他的眷属障碍佛法。《楞严经》有‘如我此说,名为佛说;不如我此说,即波旬说’之语,足征天亦有亲而魔亦有眷之外,魔眷与魔,又同为与佛说打对台的魔说。虽然如此,这只是一时的。《佛国记》有‘喝言菩萨从三阿僧抵劫苦行,不借身命’的话,阿僧抵劫是数目的极限,是无数的意思。纵使成佛也摆脱不掉天亲魔眷的拦路。但是,从自己终期于尽、归于死亡看,一切也都是阿僧抵劫的历程,人生的千变万化,看开了,不过如什”

    梁启超在烛光下,勉强把这四首诗解释出来了,在烛影摇晃中,感到一股逼人的鬼气。“潭复生真是奇男子、奇男子。”他喃喃自语,“他的诗,沉郁哀艳,字字学道有得,这种得,全是积极的、奋发的。佛法的真义告诉我们:人相、我相、众生相既一无可取,而我们犹现身于世界者,乃由性海浑圆、众生一体、慈悲为度、无有已时之故。是故以智为体、以悲为用,不染一切、亦不舍一切。又以愿力无尽故,与其布施干将来,不如布施于现在;又以大小平等故,与其侧隐于他界,不如恻隐于最近。于是凄然出世而又浩然人世,纵横四顾,有澄清天下之志。《华严经》谈‘回向’,说以十住所得诸佛之智、十行所行出世之行,济以悲愿,处俗利生。回真向俗、回智向悲,使真俗圆融、智悲不二,而回向菩提实际。佛法的真髓、佛法的真精神,正在这里啊!这些啊,才是佛法的实际。其他那些吃斋拜佛。手写‘大悲’、手数念珠的动作啊,全是假的!”

   I was stunned upon my first reading of these poems, in 1990, when the book was published by Renmin Wenxue Chubanshe, 初版,4360 copies, more than 1/100 were purchased by me, in HK and later Shenzhen, without expurgation. 全无删节。以后友谊出版社和其他版本的, 统统挨了刀。买书看书要快狠准。
