Yu Qiuyu told a story in his book "lost music far away". The story impressed me so much that after so many years I can still remember it. As time goes by, the image it left in my head becomes clearer.

The book lost music far away is about "seven sages in bamboo grove", Here "lost music" refers to the piece of music "Guang Lingsan" played by Ji Kang. What I would like to tell is the story about Ruan ji made his pilgrimage to meet Master Sun Deng.


Ruan Ji climbed up the hill where Sun Deng lived, then asked him a series of historical and philosophical questions. However, Master Sun Deng fedback with nothing after hearing his questions, even did't move his eyeball. Facing of the poker-faced Master, Ruan Ji suddenly realized that all his significant questions were nonsense. Then he whistled an improvised piece of music which has no content or fixed melody. After finished the music, he found Master Sun Deng was gazing at him and said, "One more time." Ruan Ji whistled again toward Sumen hill. This time Master Sun Deng returned to the status quo ante. Feeling a little excited and confused, Ruan Ji left. On his halfway down the hill, the miracle appeared: Amazing music windering over the hill like the sky are playing together with the moon-Master Sun Deng was whistling. The music was so glorious and saintly that it answered all historical and philosophical questions Ruan Ji asked. The music was able to penetrated into hearts and much more infectious than any languages. Ruan Ji listened carefully till it faded out. The story shows that music is a way of expression and communication for the ancients.


Recently I read about a theory that the born of universe is related to music. Where is universe from and where is it going? Where are we human beings from and where are we going? We cannot know where we are going unless we know where we are from. This is a question confusing us for thousands of years. As known in scientific world, the universe was born from the Big Bang, an explosion happend 60 biliion years ago. But what happend before the Big Bang? It's said the answer is singularity, which is something made of high dense energy. Some material I read several days before said that singularity is a wave and a piece of music, which is to say, the music created the universe. Surely it needs further discussion to see whether this romantic theory would properly explain the all time long question.


I read another piece of news, said the science has proved that the world we are living has nine dimensions. living things in 2-dimension space are not able to understand things happended in 3-dimension space. Similarly, for us who are living in 3-dimension space, anything happend in more dimension spaces are not understandable. The whistle, music and word in 9-dimension spaces are possibly exist. Is it the same to the born of universe?
